Outgoing Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard released hundreds of pages of declassified documents alleging that Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, misled Congress and systematically steered intelligence assessments away from a lab-leak origin for COVID-19. The documents — spanning emails, internal deliberations, whistleblower testimony, and investigative reports — directly contradict Fauci's 2024 congressional testimony in which he denied substantive contact with intelligence agencies on the virus's origins. Major legacy media outlets have not covered the release.
What the Documents Allege
The declassified materials show Fauci led private teleconferences with the FBI and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence as early as February 2020, and provided specific guidance for the intelligence community's 90-day review of the virus's origins in June 2021. Under oath in 2024, Fauci told Congress he had been "briefed" by certain agencies but denied speaking to them about viral research, characterizing his contributions as "not to my knowledge about COVID."
A whistleblower cited in the documents testified that the intelligence community assessed multiple times that a lab leak was the most likely origin. Fauci's alleged role was to supply hand-picked lists of scientists and virologists predisposed to the natural-origin hypothesis, ensuring those private assessments did not shape the public narrative.
The Intelligence Briefing Lawmakers Never Got
In September 2021, the intelligence community gave a closed-door briefing to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and declined to name the external experts consulted during the Biden administration's 90-day origins assessment. Republican committee members objected, noting the unnamed sources were neither clandestine operatives nor traditional intelligence assets. The Gabbard documents suggest the names were withheld because disclosure would have identified Fauci as the primary adviser.
Documents dated as early as May 2020 show subject-matter experts internally assessed a lab leak as possible or likely. The release alleges that scientists who supported that view subsequently faced professional consequences.
The Media Silence and Its Significance
Gabbard's press release frames the episode as a closed loop: Fauci advised the intelligence community toward natural origin, those assessments were cited publicly to dismiss lab-leak reporting, and Fauci's NIH avoided scrutiny over its funding of gain-of-function research. The release also accuses Fauci of promoting "disinformation and censorship" to conceal NIH's financial involvement.
No major legacy outlet has published a substantive response to or investigation of the document release. For a set of allegations that, if accurate, would implicate the nation's chief pandemic official in misleading both Congress and the public health apparatus, the absence of coverage is itself the story.
